Porn Blockers

It’s no secret that sex addicts struggle with online behavior. Hard-core pornography can be easily and instantly downloaded to computers, laptops, smart-phones, and all sorts of other Internet-accessible devices. Casual and anonymous sex partners can be picked up on “dating” websites and using “friend-finder” smart-phone apps. Prostitutes can be found in much the same way. Even seemingly benign social media sites such as Facebook are fertile ground for sex and romance addicts.

The good news is there are a number of products that can slow down the information superhighway, restricting a sex addict’s access to problematic people, places, and things. These products are typically referred to as “parental control programs.” As the name suggests, they were designed to help parents protect their kids from inappropriate Internet content and contacts, but they are equally effective tools for recovering sex addicts.

Essentially, there are two types of protection: 1) blocking/filtering; and 2) tracking/accountability. The best parental control programs for sex addicts offer both blocking/filtering and tracking/accountability protection. Blocking/filtering protection restricts a user’s access to various types of materials and websites. If a porn addict can’t access pornography, he or she can’t spend endless hours masturbating to it. If a chronic cheater can’t locate potential partners, he or she has no-one to cheat with. Tracking/accountability protection helps the addict build or rebuild trust with his or her therapist, 12-step sponsor, and spouse by letting those individuals know where he or she travels online.

There are literally dozens of parental control software products on the market. Most reviewers agree that for purposes of sexual addiction recovery the best products are:

• BSecure Family Safety, http://www.bsecure.com/, which works on Windows, iOS, and Android devices

• CovenantEyes, http://www.covenanteyes.com/, which works on Windows, MacOS (limited), iOS, and Android devices

• McAfee Safe Eyes and McAfee Family Protection, http://www.mcafee.com/us/, which works on Windows, MacOS, iOS (Safe Eyes), and Android (Family Protection) devices

• Net Nanny, http://www.netnanny.com/, which works on Windows, MacOS, and Android devices

• PureSight PC, http://www.puresight.com/, which works on Windows and Android devices

It is important to remember that no parental control software is foolproof. Even the most sophisticated programs can be circumvented, so recovering sex addicts must choose to participate in the healing process by allowing the programs to do their work. That said, installing these programs on the sex addict’s computer, laptop, smartphone, and other mobile devices is always a good idea. At worst, parental control software serves as a barrier to acting out that gives the sex addict a few moments to “think things through” and make a better, healthier, sexually sober decision.
