Porn Taking its Toll on the Personal and Professional Lives of Men

In a recent news release, the University of Sydney shared results of its most recent study on porn and how the underground world of porn is ripping families apart.

The results of the study showed that most people afflicted with porn addictions were men in serious relationships who started viewing porn at a young age.

Of the 800 participants, almost half stated that they began viewing pornography between 11 and 13 years of age. Roughly the same percent said they spent anywhere from a half hour to three hours daily viewing porn, and over half were in married or in a serious relationship.

Interestingly, only 15 percent of those with porn addictions were women.

The negative effects of porn were numerous. Several users experienced problems in their relationships such as infidelity or preferring porn over intimate time with their partners. Others had a hard time performing at work, and some even lost their jobs.

There were also those whose addictions to porn were so out of control that they were drawn to illicit pornography or had run-ins with authorities.

Researchers attribute open online access to increased use of porn. Instead of having your mom find a hidden magazine under your bed, porn can be accessed anywhere, anytime on the Internet. And, the fact that it can be done in secret helps minimize the negative stigma that may be attached to having a porn addiction.

Nearly 90 percent of study participants were open to counseling but preferred to enlist help via online treatment programs. Researchers say that they are currently working on creating such a program.

Most of those suffering from porn addictions want to get help because they’ve seen firsthand how negatively porn can impact their lives. Fortunately, for those suffering from the addiction, experts believe that this type of compulsion that can be managed successfully through therapy.
