Statistics on Pornography Usage Remain Shocking

Every second, more than $3,000 pours out for purchases related to pornography. As each second passes, more than 28,000 online viewers access pornographic materials, and at the same time, more than 370 are inputting pornography-related phrases and words into Internet searches.

At least once an hour, a pornographic video is added to the list of titles available in the United States.

Recent research is highlighting the numbers related to pornography use and consumption, numbers that are exceeding even the estimations of experts. A few years ago, the U.S. ranked fourth globally in terms of pornography use, consumption and production, with 2006 estimates claiming at least $13.33 billion in revenue in America.

On top of these numbers was China, at $27.40 billion in pornography-related revenues. Experts also point out that these revenues well outrank the revenues of major corporations like Google or Microsoft.

The types of pornography viewers engage in are also evolving. Video purchases and rentals still remain highly popular, followed by the Internet. What was once the main source of pornography – magazines – has fallen to last place in terms of pornography usage.

The changes mean viewers can remain more anonymous and can keep pornography addictions more in secret, due to technology, than ever before. It also means children and teens can access pornography sooner, and more freely, with many research reports estimating that a child’s first viewing of online pornography occurs around age 11.

Other frightening trends relate to which terms or words people are most searching for. Online users of pornography are apt to seek out sites related to hooking up with other adults or watching video content, but search phrases related to teenagers and teen-based porn are also among the highest searched-for terms.

At more than 244 million pages on the Internet related to pornography, the U.S. is ranked first in terms of availability of Internet pornography. In total, more than 100,000 web sites feature pornography with children and more than 116,000 search requests are made each day for pornographic materials that feature children and minors.

Researchers are also looking at which ages, income levels and demographic groups are most accessing pornography, highlighting the ways pornography has crossed genders and socioeconomic groups to become a global presence.
